Drama Club Kickoff

From Principal Herrera

Dear Parents, Families, and Scholars of Los Arboles Middle School,

It is with great excitement to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! This will be my second year as the proud Principal of Los Arboles Middle School, and I am thrilled that you have decided to share your children with us during their middle school years. My leadership philosophy is grounded in the belief that every child is a gift with unique skills and talents. Our role as educators and parents is to help our scholars to develop their talents and to advance their passions. It is my responsibility to ensure that our scholars are engaged in a purposeful and safe learning environment where they are challenged, and growing their creativity as critical thinkers, problem solvers, and individuals who can persevere and self-advocate to thrive in the real world. You will find that my decisions are always grounded in doing what is best for students.

In addition to our Exploratory Period and Elective classes, this school year we will be implementing Early College and Career through a Linked-Learning approach. The foundation for this program is to provide students with real-world and relevant learning experiences where lessons integrate all of the content areas around thematic units. Our scholars will have an opportunity to engage in learning linked to themes of hospitality, fashion design, Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), social justice, student voice and empowerment, and Forestry and Natural Resources. I invite you to join us at our Los Arboles Middle School Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, August 23rd from 5:30 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. to see the amazing and engaging Linked-Learning happening in our classrooms!

I feel very blessed to be the instructional leader at an amazing school with an incredible staff and within such a caring community.  I look forward to getting to know each of you better as we journey the middle school years together. With your support, we will continue to make LAMS a wonderful middle school experience for all of our scholars.

LCAP: Community Engagement

The 2016-17 Local Control Accountability Plan is underway. Visit the new 2016 LCAP web landing page here. Last year was intensive in terms of community engagement to develop a comprehensive LCAP based on the Board of Education's adopted four goal areas. This year will not be as intense in quantity of meetings. We seek to inquire if current priorities are still desired and if there are additional priorities that staff, parents, students or community members would like to see the district consider/pursue. We will host six community engagement meetings and push out a survey to gather input.

Please post the English flyer and the Spanish flyer to get word out, and encourage families to participate in a community engagement meeting.

The program started when Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. But that was only the beginning of the story. After her death, many students that Rachel reached out to shared stories with the Scotts about the profound impact her simple acts of kindness had on their lives; even preventing one young man for taking his own life. They soon realized the transformational effect of Rachel’s story and started the non-profit organization that is Rachel's Challenge today. Rachel's Challenge programs provide a sustainable, evidence-based framework for positive climate and culture in our schools. Our goal is to achieve significant gains in community engagement, faculty/student relationships, leadership potential, and school climate; along with reductions in bullying.

On September 19th, Rachel’s Challenge and its three part series will take place on our campus:

1) Presentations

2) Friends of Rachel’s (FOR) Training Session (Limited to 100 students)

3) A Live Community Event at 5:30 p.m.

In the morning, there will be two grade appropriate presentations that will be approximately one hour long: the 6th grade presentation (The Story Presentation) and the 7th/8th grade presentation (The Challenge Presentation). In the afternoon, there will be a 90 minute Friends of Rachel’s (FOR) Training which is limited to 100 scholars.  The purpose of the training is to maintain the momentum from the program by having groups of adults and scholars perform acts of kindness on a regular basis.  There will be a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio during the training session. In the evening, the Live Community Event will take place and we invite all families and community members to attend!
