Our Program

Welcome to GEAR UP!

This 2015-2016, we will be located in room 17.

GEAR UP is a federal grant that was awarded to the University of California, Santa Cruz to serve MPUSD in 2014. So here we are at Los Arboles Middle School!  Our cohort is the whole class of 2020 and 2021; in other words, we will serve every student (Everyone! No sign ups necessary) in the 7th and 8th grade during the 2015-2016 academic school year. This will be a 7 year program, following our cohort into Marina High School and wrapping up when our current 7th graders graduate high school in 2021. Liliana Robles, College Facilitator, oversees student services; feel free to contact her with any questions (information on the left-hand column.)

These are the main services we offer:

  • One-on-One academic and career advising
  • In-Class tutoring, lunch- time and after-school tutoring in room 17
  • Field trips to college campuses
  • Lunch-time workshops on different college and career topics
  • Recognition for good grades, perfect attendance and participation in GEAR UP activities
  • Lunch-time college related activities
  • Summer Program

In addition to student services, we also have a parent services component to our grant. Karina Cervantez, Family Involvement Coordinator, organizes parent academies, workshops and meets with parents to speak about their children's goals and how they can support them on their paths to college. If you are interested in attending parent workshops or have any questions, please feel free to contact to Karina (information on the left-hand column.)

LAMS GEAR UP Students in Action

Parent Academy, May 2015

This is the group of graduates of our first GEAR UP Parent Academy at Los Arboles Middle School. The parents spent four weeks learning about resources on campus, communication with their child and with the school, and that it's never too early to start preparing for college. We look forward to continuing to engage the parents in participating in additional training and serving as parent leaders.
